The Tirfor machine was invented and patented by Mr. Simon Faure at the time of the Second World War. The Tirfor is a multipurpose manually operated wire rope lever hoist. It works by pulling directly on the rope, the pull applied by two pairs of jaws exerting a grip on the rope in proportion to the load lifted or pulled.

With minimum effort all sorts of operations can be performed easily.

Any length of rope may be used in a Tirfor with operation always under the control of the user. Movement is controlled to the last millimeter and the equipment can be carried and operated by one person. The Tirfor is of rugged construction requiring little maintenance.

The principle may be described as 'hand-to-hand' like a person pulling a rope. While one hand pulls, the other changes position to pull in turn. The two hands represent the two jaws of the Tirfor. They grip the wire rope without damaging it and pull it during forward operation and restrain it during reverse operation.

The power of Tirfor machines may be greatly increased by using multiple sheave blocks. These increase the capacity of Tirfor machines by 2, 3 or 4 times or more. See the diagrams below..

For most applications, an allowance must be made for friction in the sheaves. Ensure that the capacity of the blocks, fittings and anchor points are suitable for the load.

When using a Tirfor for pulling, remember that the necessary effort is not equal to the weight of the load to be moved.

Lifting -Anchored above the load.

Lifting-Anchored to the load.

Lifting-Anchored at ground level.
